This work studies the connections between two PDE-constrained diffeomor-phic registration methods. The methods have been selected for their relevance in the diffeomorphic registration literature. From the initial PDE-constrained variational formulation, the methods seem to be highly unrelated. However, an in-depth study of the derivations involved in the computation of the optimiza-tion ingredients reveals interesting connections that are worth to be stated. The insights provided in this work may bridge the gap between both methods, underpinning the proposal of improved PDE-constrained LDDMM methods.
