    Research Interests

    Pharmacology; Biomedicine

    Biography

Dr. Bergantin received his academic education at EPM-UNIFESP (Brazil) and UAM (Spain): degree in biomedicine (2008), MSc (2010) and PhD (2014). His research involves neuropsychopharmacology, autonomic and cardiovascular pharmacology, cell signaling mediated by Ca2+ and cAMP. His research work solved the enigma of the paradoxical effects produced by L-type Ca2+ channel blockers (TOP 25 Hottest Articles - Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology - Cell Calcium - TOP 1 July to September 2013/ TOP 5 October to December 2013/ TOP 1 January to December 2013 full year/TOP 6 January to March 2014). Since 1975, several clinical and experimental studies have reported that acute and chronic administration of L-type Ca2+ channel blockers (CCB), such as nifedipine, produces reduction in arterial pressure associated with a paradoxical increase of sympathetic activity. Despite this sympathetic hyperactivity has been initially attributed to adjust reflex of arterial pressure, the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in this apparent sympathomimetic effect of the Ltype CCB remained unclear for decades. In 2013, Dr. Bergantin and collaborators discovered that this paradoxical increase in sympathetic activity produced by L-type CCB is due to interaction of the Ca2+/cAMP signaling pathways. Then, the pharmacological manipulation of the Ca2+/cAMP interaction produced by combination of the L-type CCB used in the antihypertensive therapy, and cAMP accumulating compounds used in the antidepressive therapy, could represent a potential cardiovascular risk for hypertensive patients due to increase in sympathetic activity. In contrast, this pharmacological manipulation could be a new therapeutic strategy for increasing neurotransmission in psychiatric disorders, and producing neuroprotection in the neurodegenerative diseases (Bergantin and Caricati-Neto, 2016 Eur J Pharmacol; Caricati-Neto et al., 2015 Pharm Res Perspect). Dr. Bergantin has published several articles in international journals (> 30), book chapters and an international book. He is member of several editorial boards of international journals (> 40, including editor-in-chief of 2 international journals). Dr. Bergantin has been frequently invited (every week) to be honorable guest (speaker) in international conferences.

    Biography

His early studies were devoted to the role of cytokines in immunopathogenesis of HBV and HCV chronic hepatitis. Specifically, He have shown that Interferon gamma production was impaired in hepatitis B patients and that in HCV-infection, Th1-Th2 cytokine imbalance led to persisting circulation of virus. Additionally, in experimental systems, he studied how histamine regulates cytokine production by T-lymphocytes via triggering of protein kinase A and JAK-STAT1 signaling and found that histamine suppresses the production of Th1 cytokines and activated the production of Th2 cytokines. He joined the Liver Study Unit at the Omaha VAMC and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2001. Together with Dr. Donohue, using ethanol-metabolizing hepatoma cells, he studied the role alcohol in the regulation of proteasome activity. Having a strong interest to the effects of cytokines on proteasome, He found that ethanol metabolism modulates proteasome activity by the level of oxidative stress and that proteasome activation is IFN gamma dependent since it is regulated via the JAK-STAT1 pathway.

    Biography

The main research line of Dr. Miguel Romero Perez’s career focuses on to evaluate the effects of vasoactive agents signaling modulation, particularly nitric oxide, angiotensin-II and endothelin-1, by flavonoids and PPAR β/δ agonists on hypertension. During my PhD, I evaluated the effects of flavonoids, especially quercetin and wine polyphenols, on endothelial dysfunction and its potential protective role in hypertension. Their studies report for the first time that quercetin and red wine polyphenols improve endothelial function in different animal model of hypertension by regulation of the expression and activity of eNOS and NAD(P)H oxidase and inhibition of angiotensin-II and endothelin-1 signaling and downstream pathway. During Miguel Romero Perez’s postdoc, his efforts were focused on understanding the pharmacology and molecular regulation of membrane receptors and its downstream effectors, particularly NO, in animal and human cardiac myocytes and vascular cells. He worked on several projects focused on the study of the biology of NO. Participation in these projects allowed him to acquire a proficient level in the field of vascular reactivity and molecular biology and to gain experience on the study of endothelial function applied to the field of cardiovascular disease. Finally, he studied the cardiovascular effects of Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor beta/delta (PPAR β/δ) activation in several experimental models of hypertension. Our studies shown that activation of PPAR β/δ reduced blood pressure and improved the endothelial dysfunction, by interfering with both angiotensin II and endothelin-1 signaling pathway, through up-regulation of the regulators of G-protein coupled signaling proteins. Currently, his research target focuses on evaluate the role of gut microbiota on the development of vascular dysfunction in obesity and hypertension, focusing in the involvement of endotoxemia and immune system. For this purpose, they used gut microbiota manipulations such as germ free animals, antibiotics, immunosuppressants and probiotics, which may help us to develop new therapeutic strategies.

    Biography

Vincent Van Ginneken (PhD-1 Leiden University, The Netherlands; MSc & PhD-2 Wageningen University, The Netherlands) was born 23 December 1963 in Amsterdam. After working for 20 years in the Academic world in the Netherlands (Leiden University, Leiden University Medical Center, TNO-Pharma, Wageningen University) he became Chairman & Scientific Director of Blue Green Technologies (www.bluegreentechnologies), presently a “think-tank” organization but with a portfolio to grow out to a professional commercial organization. Vincent van Ginneken is from from origin a Comparative Animal Physiologist -specialized in the energy metabolism- and most of his earlier work is related to this topic (and presently still). However, more recently his research became a blending of several scientific disciplines: nutrition, ecology, medicine etcetera because a myriad of global environmental problems human mankind has to face and dissolve within three decades before the midst of the 21st century when around 10 billion people will live at our planet. His perception is that the major culprit in modern welfare diseases is healthy nutrition delivered partly by our oceans. This strategy can halt the pandemic of economic very costly modern welfare diseases like obesity, type-2 diabetes, mild-Alzheimer, dementia and lipid related cancer. From his recent work following a Systems Biology Lipidomics based approach he can describe in most cases the pathogenesis of the mentioned diseases but he can also address some solutions, mainly clinic nutritional related. These economically very costly health related problems of the 21st century of the “baby-boom generation” seems insoluble but if you read some of his publications some of his perspectives can lead to solutions. He has ≈85 publications in peer-reviewed world leading physiological journals including Nature. His research is from basic principles deeply rooted in “comparative animal physiology” but has important links between the different sub-disciplines and is multi-disciplinary. Waiting for your reply for approval to become member of the editorial board of your eminent journal. Kindly regards. Sincerely yours, Vincent van Ginneken.
